In the midst of our 15-year anniversary milestone, we’ve looked back and celebrated what has been. It is important and sacred work to remember how far we have traveled, the struggles we have overcome, and the success we have enjoyed together. We remember how faithful our God has been in the midst of all that has been.
Perhaps when Jesus told his disciples he would be leaving them soon, they looked back on the past 3 years to remember all that had happened. The miracles, the vision, the inbreaking of a new reality marked by love and life was all made possible because Jesus was with them. How could the coming years compare to what they had just experienced.
It’s might be surprising, then, that Jesus says this in John 14:12:
I assure you that whoever believes in me will do the works that I do. They will do even greater works than these because I am going to the Father.
Even though Jesus was going to be leaving them physically, Christ would still be at work in them and through them so that they might love even more deeply and live even more fully. This milestone wasn’t an end to what had been, but a continuation of what is and a beginning to what will be. If you believe that your best days are behind you, you are probably right. But if you truly believe that God is going to work in you and through you to accomplish even greater works than before (even if it looks different than before), you are also right.
It is sacred work to remember our past, but it is just as sacred to imagine our future. Who will we be and what will we accomplish together in the next 15 years? May we be people who make ourselves available to God as we join the Holy Spirit in bringing about more life and more love in our homes, church, community, and world as we live more fully into the vision Christ has given us!
