Jireh - do you know what it means?

I didn’t until I listened to a worship song called “Jireh.” The song was good and catchy and I liked the lyrics! Except I didn’t really know what “Jireh” meant. The chorus rings out “Ji-reh, you are enough.” I answer my questions like most people these days, and I typed it into google to find the answer. I learned Jehovah-Jireh is a name for God. And it’s actually one of the most popular names used for God. Which I found funny because I can’t remember reading it in scripture. Where is it used and what does it mean?

Instead of seeing Jireh, you might see scripture that reads, “The Lord will provide.” Or the Lord has provided. Or the Lord sees. We see God provide throughout scripture - a sacrifice for Abraham, rain during a drought, food for the thousands. The people of God would respond that God sees us or God provides for us. People might feel like there is no solution, no way out to their problem - but God finds a way. He finds a way to protect, guide, and provide for people.

I really enjoy the song. I listened to it on the way to work last week and really listened to the words. As I listened and sang, tears began to run down my face. Which isn’t super surprising - it takes very little to get my waterworks started. The chorus says,

Jireh, You are enough
I will be content in every circumstance

I stopped to wonder if I truly believed God is enough. Do I truly live my life in a way that reflects that I am content with what God has provided? Do I truly believe that everything could be taken away, and God would be enough? Reality is - I don’t.

I struggle to be content with what I currently have and feel like I don’t have enough. I want more time, more freedom, more and more and more. If I’m not content when I have plenty how can I be content when I am left wanting?

It’s important to practice contentment. To quench our desire for more with God’s word, or God’s love. To appreciate the breath in our lungs, the beauty in creation, the depth we find in relationships. God has given us more than enough.

Towards the end of the song, they begin to paraphrase Matthew 6:25-34.

If He dresses the lilies with beauty and splendor
How much more will He clothe you?
How much more will He clothe you?
If He watches over every sparrow
How much more does He love you?
How much more does He love you?

What has God given you? How has God provided for you? How has God seen you?

My prayer is that we remember, in every circumstance, God is enough.
