New Perspective

I help run a non- profit organization that raises money for law enforcement officers in the DFW area that are killed or seriously injured. Our last fundraiser was for a Mansfield officer that was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle on his way to work. The officer was care flighted to the hospital and taken straight into surgery. When he came out of surgery, he learned they had to amputate his leg.

A few weeks ago we gathered at the Mansfield Police Department to present him with a check for the amount of money we had raised during our fundraiser. After we presented him with the check, he asked if he could say a few words.

The officer said that he had become cynical about life and the world. He was so tired of all of the badness and fighting and hating. He believes the accident happened for a reason. He believes God was speaking to him. You see after the accident, he saw so many good things happen. A company renovated his home to make it wheelchair accessible for free. Other officers worked his part time jobs and gave him the money. People paid their bills, brought over so much food, flew in family members to visit him and so much more. Strangers that he had never met stepped in and showed kindness when they did not have to.

Instead love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. If you do, you will have a great reward.

Luke 6:35

His life has changed now. He lost his leg, but he gained a whole new perspective on life.

When bad things happen to us whether we get sick, we get in an accident or we just have a bad day, it is hard to know where is God? Why is God letting this happen to me? These are three questions that I tell kids to ask God during bad times.

  • Will you help me believe you know best?

  • What do you want me to do in my life?

  • Will you help me think about Jesus?
